Sabão

«Para grandes males, grandes remédios. Assim pensou Hugo Marçal, um dos sete arguidos da Casa Pia, condenado anteontem a seis anos e dois meses de prisão, quando, a 15 de Outubro de 2003, decidiu comer o sabão que se encontrava na casa de banho do Tribunal de Instrução Criminal (TIC) de Lisboa, onde estava a ser sujeito ao terceiro interrogatório judicial, liderado pelo juiz Rui Teixeira. "Estava desesperado. Naquele momento faria qualquer coisa para interromper o interrogatório", revela no livro que intitulou Sabão Azul e Branco, que estará nas bancas a partir de amanhã. [...]

"Tive uma ideia. Pedi para ir à casa de banho, o que foi autorizado, e resolvi comer um sabão azul e branco que lá se encontrava", confessa. E continua: "Esfreguei bem o sabão, para lhe tirar a parte superficial e proteger-me de eventuais contágios e comi-o aos bocados".

"Sabia que a seguir ficaria maldisposto, que vomitaria e que Rui Teixeira teria de interromper a diligência", conta. O sabão não o desiludiu. Passado uns minutos, segundo escreve, começou a sentir-se bastante enjoado. Teve que voltar à casa de banho para vomitar. E Rui Teixeira determinaria a interrupção do interrogatório. "Naquela altura de desespero e sofrimento, esse sabão azul e branco representaria para mim o juiz das minhas garantias. Seria ele que limparia o manto impregnado de nódoas, de sujidade, de falsidade e calúnia, para deixar transparecer a minha inocência", afirma Hugo Marçal.»

Representations of chavs and scallies share a number of common features with most representations of working-class sexuality. Most notably they fix particular sexual attributes to persons and bodies through the notion of excess and vulgarity (Skeggs, 1997, 2004). The working class are often depicted as all body (Stallybrass and White, 1986) – bodies which house sexual/biological drives not entirely amenable to bourgeois codes of civility. In representations of chav masculinity, like in many representations from Victorian society onwards, working-class sexuality is depicted as rampant, immoral and animalistic [...].

The working class has always been viewed by middle-class observers [...] with a disgusted fascination because they function as repositories for so many middle-class fears. Those ‘hard Essex lads’ which figure so prominently in the representations under discussion here perfectly express the relationship between fear, anxiety, fascination and desire. They are ‘hard’ and therefore they are potentially dangerous; yet they have a fascination precisely because they symbolize all that is ‘other’ to middle-class life.

The most pernicious aspect of this process is that while the male chav has value in one context, value created by his use as a sexual object, such value is based on a continual assertion of his worthlessness. The chav remains an object – before, during and after his use – of disgust, filth and repudiation.”
